Madonna Arrives At Malawian Court

Posted by audioman On March - 30 - 2009

Madonna has arrived at a Malawi court to begin the process of adopting a second child from the African country.

The Lilongwe court listings showed one adoption case for today with the child’s name given as Chifundo James.

A welfare officer speaking anonymously, said the child was now four and that her 18-year-old mother had died shortly after giving birth.

Madonna has said it is “amazing” to be back in the country where she adopted David Banda in 2006.

The girl at the centre of the case, whose name had been reported as Mercy James, is in the same orphanage that was home to David, who is now three years old.

Madonna, dressed in a black and white skirt and carrying a straw hat, entered the court of Judge Esme Chombo through a back door and the case will be heard in private.

The singer has come in for criticism over her plans. David Nutt, spokesman for the Save the Children charity, urged Madonna to think again.

“We don’t want to pick on one individual - any time, any set of circumstances can change,” he said.

“But the problem is, very often this is the wrong thing to do, and Madonna tends to make it seem like it’s the answer to everything and all problems, and it just isn’t.”

But Steven Whitehead from the charity Oasis, which represents families who adopt from abroad, said foreign adoption was a good idea in many cases.

He said: “There are a number of children for whom inter-country adoption represents their only chance of having a family, and the human convention on the right of the child gives every child the right to a family.”

“And it’s much better for them be in a family, wherever it may happen to be, than be in institutional care. The damaging effect of institutional care on children is so well recognised that, you know, it’s just not an issue of debate.”

Madonna’s spokeswomen, Liz Rosenberg and Barbara Charone, and her lawyer in Malawi, Alan Chinula, have not commented.

Writing in response to e-mailed questions from Nation readers last week, Madonna said: “Many people - especially our Malawian friends - say that David should have a Malawian brother or sister.”

“It’s something I have been considering.”

In 2006, critics accused the Malawian government of sidestepping laws banning foreign adoptions in order to allow the celebrity to take David home with her.

Madonna’s adoption of David Banda was confirmed last year.

‘Role model’

After the adoption was legalised, Madonna said the difficulties had arisen because “this adoption essentially was the beginning of the creation of adoption laws in Malawi.”

She hoped it would make it easier for others to adopt from the country and explained: “I am the template or the role model, so to speak, for future adoptions.”

The star also has two biological children - Rocco, her son with former husband Guy Ritchie, and Lourdes, whose father is Carlos Leon.

Film director Ritchie and Madonna’s divorce was finalised in November.

Malawi does not, as a rule, approve adoptions for single or divorced people, but the official at the country’s welfare department said that each case was considered on merit.

Madonna has also established a charity, Raising Malawi, which aims to provide accommodation, food, education and other support to orphans in the country.

Madonna Adoption Plea Postponed

Posted by audioman On March - 30 - 2009

Madonna must return to court in Malawi on Friday to learn if she can adopt a second child from the African country.

The singer attended an hour-long hearing in Lilongwe to ask for permission to take four-year-old Chifundo James out of the country.

Chifundo has been living in an orphanage since her 18-year-old mother died, shortly after giving birth.

Madonna has said it is “amazing” to be back in the country where she adopted David Banda in 2006.

The girl at the centre of the case, whose name translates into English as Mercy, is in the same orphanage that was home to David, who is now three years old.

Madonna entered the court of Judge Esme Chombo through a back door without answering questions from the media.

The case was heard in private but afterwards a lawyer for the singer confirmed Madonna was seeking an 18 month interim adoption order.

Legal challenge

Madonna is in the country with David Banda and her two biological children, Lourdes and Rocco. She is applying to adopt Mercy as a single parent.

The singer has already been criticised by international charities and now a human rights organisation in Malawi is threatening to try and stop the adoption taking place.

Mavuto Bamusi, a campaigner for the Human Rights Consultative Committee, told Reuters: “We are surprised at what’s going on. We are contemplating challenging this adoption.”

The chairman of the HRCC, Undule Mwakusunguraof accused Madonna of acting “like a bully” saying: “She has the money and the status to use her profile to manipulate, to fast-track the process.”

The singer had supporters among the small crowd of onlookers outside the court. E Ngulinga told Associated Press: “We are blessed for what Madonna is doing here.”

“That baby is going to have the advantages of going to school and of becoming someone. Here it is very difficult” he added.

Family reunion

David Banda, Madonna’s first Malawian child has been introduced to his father for the first time since the boy left the country in 2006.

Yohane Banda said his son did not recognise him: “He asked me in English who I was and what I do. When I told him ‘I am your daddy’ he looked surprised.”

The two spoke through a translator as David does not speak the local language, Chichewa, and Mr Banda speaks no English.

The father spoke to Madonna about his son’s schooling and described the singer as a “sweet lady”.

David was left at an orphanage after his mother died. His father said: “It’s amazing how David has grown; I can’t believe he is the same small and sickly baby we left at Home of Hope.”

Mr Banda, who is now remarried and has a young son noted: “David still resembles me but he looks very much like his half brother Dingiswayo.”

“I can’t wait to see the two brothers reunite,” he added.

In 2006, critics accused the Malawian government of sidestepping laws banning foreign adoptions in order to allow the celebrity to take David Banda home with her.

‘Role model’

After the adoption was legalised in 2008, Madonna said the difficulties had arisen because “this adoption essentially was the beginning of the creation of adoption laws in Malawi”.

She hoped it would make it easier for others to adopt from the country and explained: “I am the template or the role model, so to speak, for future adoptions.”

Madonna’s divorce from film director Guy Ritchie was finalised in November.

Malawi does not, as a rule, approve adoptions for single or divorced people, but the official at the country’s welfare department said that each case was considered on merit.

Madonna has also established a charity, Raising Malawi, which aims to provide accommodation, food, education and other support to orphans in the country.

Google China To Push Music Tracks

Posted by audioman On March - 30 - 2009

Google is offering free downloads of licensed music tracks in China.

Rival search engines in China point users to unlicensed music, which reportedly makes up 99% of all tracks distributed in China.

The firm has just 16.6% share of the search market versus 76.9% for Baidu.com, according to the Chinese Internet Network Information Centre.

Google said it had no plans to expand its music service beyond China.

More than 350,000 songs, from Sony, Warner, EMI and Universal, will be available to Chinese users of Google, which has partnered with music website Top100.cn. Google will share advertising revenue with the major music labels.

Lee Kai-Fu, president of Google in greater China, said the fact it did not offer music downloads was the missing piece of its strategy in the country.

“We are offering free, high quality and legal downloads,” Lee said. “We were missing one piece … we didn’t have music.”

Research showed 84% of people in China used search engines to find music, said Mr Lee.

“This is the first serious attempt to start (monetising) the online market in China. I can’t overestimate how important this is,” said Lachie Rutherford, president of Warner Music Asia Pacific and Asia chairman of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

The IFPI report that China’s total legitimate music market is worth $76m, less than 1% of global recorded music sales.

International users will not be able to listen to or download songs from the Google China music service.

Whilst the country is gripped in a recession, Creamfields are offering their loyal and longstanding fans the chance to grab themselves a cheaper ticket.  With some other festivals having increased their ticket price this year, this is a bold and welcome move from market leaders Creamfields.

Creamfields CEO James Barton says: ‘We’re in the midst of a recession with most people having to tighten their belts, so we’ve made the first 5000 tickets as cheap as we possibly can. I hope this goes a little way to easing the cash burden for the people who have been there for us through thick and thin.  On a first come first serve basis, it will be our most dedicated fans who will benefit.’

Green Day Made Into A Musical

Posted by audioman On March - 30 - 2009

A musical version of Green Day’s American Idiot album is set to premiere in California this autumn.

The stage adaptation of the Grammy-winning album, directed by Tony award-winning director Michael Mayer, will open at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September.

The New York Times said the band - lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong, drummer Tre Cool and bassist Mike Dirnt - are credited with the show’s music and have collaborated with Mayer on the stage version.

Armstrong said: “It doesn’t make a lot of sense but that’s what I love about it.”

“When people see it, it’s going to be my wildest dream.”

Mayer told the newspaper there were no plans for a Broadway run for the musical but said the show was likely to continue after its one-month run in Berkeley.

American Idiot has sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and won Grammys for rock album and record of the year.

Hits from the album include the title track, Boulevard of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Green Day announced last week their new album 21st Century Breakdown will be released on May 15th.

Kelly Jones: ‘Razorlight Are In F**king Trouble’

Posted by audioman On March - 30 - 2009

Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones has advised Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell to “get a new haircut” to turn around the band’s fortunes.

Speaking at the Teenage Cancer Trust show last week ahead of both bands’ co-headline appearance at the Isle Of Wight Festival, Jones likened Razorlight’s position to that of his own band.

He told MTV: “If there’s any band members left by that point… he reminds me of where we were with our third album… in fucking trouble!”

Razorlight recently lost drummer Andy Burrows following disappointing sales of 2008 album ‘Slipway Fires’.

However, Jones had advice for Borrell in riding out the storm. “Just change your haircut, they’ll forget all about you then. It’s a new you – Madonna’s done it all her life.”
